El Salvador Day 6 & 7 - Depart Usulutan and go to San Salvador.

El Salvador Day 6 - Final day in the field for week 1 folks.

After what was expected to be a not so restful night the team seemed enthusiastic about finishing their work here. We expected some grumpy, irritable folks due to the problems we have had over the last 48 hours, but everyone seemed ready to go again.

The nursing crew was cranking with Jorge and Sulma's guidance keeping order and control in registration line. That helps us move on through the patients we need to register for next week.

Phil's school evangelism group swelled to a record size. We didn't have any lice shampoo so we freed those folks to go out. We closed down the pharmacy to give them a chance to get out. Our skeleton crew in the clinic rocked and rolled all day as the evangelism teams combed the neighborhoods for studies.

At lunch we a little challenge as we didn't have forks or enough plates, but we got through that challenge as well. Two teams were very late coming back from lunch and created a little concern on my part. However, when the last team came in they brought in a precious soul to be baptized.

Our evening service was quite large with record number in the teen class, children's class, and the new converts. The worship service was down a little being a Thursday night, but the Serra Nonsal congregation came in their bus and helpful enlarge the crowd.

The faces of the team showed the sadness of leaving a work part done yet satisfaction of doing a lot of good in this community. It was exciting to see the progress that has been made here since last year. The classroom addition has been completed and the children's room was decorated beautifully. It seems Sulma and Jeremias will make an outstanding couple in this community.

Our return to the hotel uplifted our spirits to see power throughout and water running. We even had the opportunity to turn our A/C on.

Our last dinner with this group was very good-steak, potatoes, beans and rice, rice and beans, pico, and fruit. The crew topped off the meal with banana pudding for dessert.

The last minute admin details seemed to consumed the evening. Then wth a pop and a flash out went the lights and my power.

El Salvador Day 7.

Most of us got a good night's sleep after the power came on between 10 and 11 on Thursday night. Light breakfast from our bags started our day. Our luggage truck was loaded at 7 am and we were out by 7:40 or so. Only one team member left their passport in their room (they are staying two weeks and had left the bag with it in their room). The bus continued on and the van retrieved the bag. We arrived after a short delay along the way around 10 at the Comfort Inn. A policeman pulled us over. A short negotiation and a few chocolate brownies got us on our way. The hotel left the breakfast bar open for us while we went thru the long check in process. It was a rush to get in and out in our two groups. One went to the mall for lunch and shopping and then to the craft souvenir shopping area. The other went to some Mayan ruins. I will need to do some reading to understand what I saw. We have dinner planned tonight at a Mexican restaurant then to the hotel to sing and get a good night´s sleep.

Week 1 folks leave in the morning and group two comes in about the same time. Half way thru our work in Santa Elena.

El Salvador Day 5

Normal day in El Salvador. We left to work hopeful we would have power and therefore water when we returned. That didn't work out. Our crack maintenance crew of 3 worked into the night with the hotel staff and electricians to rewire the electrical box and install a generator for the pump. By 10 pm the central building had water but not enough electricity to power the A/C. At least that is what the owner decided. We shared our showers but many of the team went to bed without water or showers. Not the most comfortable thing but certainly nothing like a crown of thorns or nails in the feet and hands.

The clinic operation resumed on schedule. We saw more patients than the previous days and were working on appointments for Tuesday morning. The people in Santa Elena seemed to be fairly healthy. Not as much lice as we have seen in other towns in Usulutan department.

Phil's school evangelism group is covering the kids. The schools here run double sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. That gives us more kids to visit with in fewer schools. Studies continued throughout the day with teams returning in many situations to continue previous studies. A lot of good work is being done in this community. At the evening service a man was restored.

We are hoping that we will have appointments set for up through at least all of the morning on Wednesday of next week for week 2 folks.

El Salvador Day 4 Hump Day for first week.

Day 4 Hump Day.

Really good day! We had 2 baptisms from a Bible study conducted by the team. They were a couple of young teen age girls. And then tonight in services a lady came forward and was baptized after services. I thought I would put the exciting stuff at the beginning of the report.

Most of the clinic activities were pretty normal today. We did turn people away at the end of the day but still only saw a couple of hundred people. Seems most want to see the doctor. Look out week 2 people we are going to be slammed. Rest up this week.

We finally got around to posting the reports from previous days today. Hopefully some of you can keep track of what is going on. We have had the use of a couple of cell phones to make contact back home as well. Sure not like the early days when we weren't basically incommunicato from the time we left the airport until we came back from the field.

I was able to read the posts this afternoon. We appreciate the prayers. We understand Bill Staggs is to have surgery next Tuesday and Charles White had a heart attack last Saturday. That is all we have heard on Charles. Please pray for those men as well as the work here in El Salvador. Your support is much appreciated.

As I write this it is 8:38 Central time. They don't do day light savings time down here. Week One folks will be really confused on time when they return. They leave on Central Standard Time, go thru Atlanta on Eastern Daylight time and then land on CDT. Week 2 folks fly thru Houston so their time confusion will be quite less.

We seem to be creating a power overload situation here at the hotel. Didn't have that problem in Buenos Aires! Saturday night we lost power for an hour or so due to the wires serving the hotel overheating and melting. Tonight we lost power around 8 pm as the power box coming into the building caught fire. This repair may take a little longer. The rooms in the central part of the hotel have power but not the rest of the complex and neither does the water pump. No showers for now. No lights for most and no A/C. Didn't have that problem in San Augustin. We had one night that there where the wind blew full force all night. But I am digressing.

Our crack maintenance and kitchen crew got creative and filled some waterbags for showers. After hanging one in the shower Jack informed us that they have the reserve water on for some rooms and we are in the process of taking Navy showers.

Tomorrow we are going to try to change our routine some to speed up the process and get more people thru without turning anyone away. I don't know how many we will be able to get to and thru the clinic. We'll just have to see how it goes.

Keep praying for the work.

El Salvador Day 3

March 12, 2007, Day 3 of Santa Elena Mission Work 2007

Another good day in the neighborhood. It was warm but not terribly hot if you were in the shade. We good started on time, almost. Dennis Buchanan delivered the message at devo and did a great job. That, of course, was after a tremendous breakfast by the Travis cook corps TCC).

The clinic opened on time with the evangelistic team departing on schedule. I keep waiting for the big bumps, but none so far. The crowd at the clinic has been much smaller than in previous years. We had two theories on this at the end of the day on Sunday. One was that the word had not gotten out about the clinic. After the second straight day of light turnout we are now suspecting that the reason is that there is no doctor, nor dentist, nor much in medications. While we had a good smooth day and served a little over two hundred, that is a far cry from the 400-500 per day we have served in the past. I am afraid that being flexible means being slammed next week, but we will see.

Jack will get the numbers reported in the morning, but I suspect that all will be up from Sunday with the possible exception of the teen class. We were thrilled to see the handicapped man back for more teaching tonight as well as one going forward for prayers. To cap the night off Evelyn came to the services after being estranged from the church and her friend Sulma. It was quite a tearful reunion with her brothers and sisters in Christ.

We also were able to renew our friendship with Miseal and obtained his assistance in getting a letter to get us in the school. He has been a great friend of the work here since our first trip to Usulutan. I only pray that some day we will be able to reach him spiritually.

Another fine meal by TCC completed a great day. After a little fellowship it is time to turn in. Almost...

...It is a tribute to our team and the occupants of a half a dozen rooms that none of them complained about being moved at 9 pm on Sunday nor about Jack and me knocking on the wrong door at 6 am nor none of our teammates were more than 45 seconds late for devo on Monday. Evidently the hotel needed to move some folks around on Sunday night and jack didn't know until he found a list from Victor showing the relocations. Even the info that Victor had was incorrect. After a while we sorted things out and hopefully will awaken the correct people in the morning.

Hopefully tomorrow will be another successful day for the evangelistic efforts. We plan to move some folks around to get some new experiences. Most importantly we will reach out to more people to tell them about Jesus and bring them closer to their Savior.

El Salvador Mission Work Day 2

This is the end of day 2 of the Latin American Mission trip for 2007. I didn't write anything for day one. I'd love to say I was just too busy working or to say technical difficulties hindered me, but the reality it was just age. I just flat forgot.

The team arrived safely with no hitches. We made it thru the airport check-in in record time. It helped that Delta had the counter open when we got there at 4:30 instead of opening at 5. We were thru check-in with all of our bags by 5 and the last few were working their way thru security. Nashville to Atlanta leg was uneventful. We were joined by several of our teammates from Kentucky and Knoxville. And another uneventful flight transpired to get us to San Salvador just a little late.

Our bus ride was longer than usual as our driver was new and didn't take any chances. That was a good thing, but he didn't pass anyone and that just doesn't get you there very fast. Hotel check-in went about how we expected. The rooms weren't ready and after shifting some folks around from the original assignments we got everyone in their rooms. After dinner and a team meeting we are all ready to go to bed after starting the day so early (230 AM for Sissy and me). Well, most of us were. We had our regular evening singing but that ended before our official "lights out" time of 11.

Today we started our regular routine-up at 6, breakfast done by 7, devo at 730, on the bus by 8 - well, sort of, we were about 10 minutes late. The members here in El Salvador had done a magnificent job of preparing for our visit. The site was clean, the classrooms were completed and Sulma has done a super job getting her room decorated to teach the ninos here. They had put up 2 palm leaf canopy that covered the area for the patients waiting to see the nurses and where we conducted the daytime ladies and children's classes. We just had to put up the white canopies for the rest of the worship area. The ladies class went well as did the preachers class. We planned to open the clinic by 12 and were ready to start seeing patients by 10:30. We ran for about an hour but closed down early to adjust our procedures and for lunch. As has been mentioned Bill Staggs went home sick for the first time in his many years in this work and we needed to sort out the medicine dispensing. Noelle is doing a super job filling in for Bill, but there is a lot to be said for 20 plus years of organizing a pharmacy on one of these trips. We are adjusting and being FLEXIBLE like we always say is required.

The door knocking teams went out as planned but teen evangelism and school evangelism teams were a little short as we moved some folks to help Noelle. The schools weren't open on Sunday anyway. All in all the first day went well with our new routine of nurses only on the first week. Still some kinks to work out, but we will make it work.

Our patient count was considerably down, but that was alright considering we were sorting things out. It will likely pick up as the word gets out to more people in the area.

The meals have been great as we expected. Ronnie's crew always feeds us well. Our maintenance crew is short handed, but seems to be holding their own. We are teaching Buck how to get by with less hoping that will translate to lower taxes in MJ! We will be OK here as long as one of them doesn't go down. The team is working well together and things are going well. Stay tuned for more updates, unless I forget.

El Salvador work 2007 Post One

In January of 2001 Mount Juliet church of Christ had been working in Latin America primarily in Panama through Forrest Park church of Christ in Valdosta, GA, for a number of years and we were looking for a specific work to concentrate our efforts. There was an earthquake in El Salvador that did extensive damage throughout the country and we took our first Medical Mission Team to San Augustin that year. Since then we have done work in San Francisco Javier, Usulutan, San Salvador and Santa Elena in addition to San Augustin.

This year we are returning to Santa Elena to work with the congregation in that town. You can find Santa Elena using Google Earth as well as Usulutan and San Salvador. San Augustin and San Francisco are in the same area (eastern El Salvador in the Usulutan department between the volcano range and the ocean.

As I write this on Thursday afternoon, March 8, 3 of our team members are already there: Bill Staggs and Jack Farber flew out on Monday and Penn Little left yesterday. On Friday Wendy Graham, Ronnie Travis and Dennis "Buck" Buchanan head out to prepare the site for the first team to arrive.

On Saturday, March 10, the week 1 crew of nearly 50 folks head down to El Salvador, with a planned arrival around midday on Saturday. Most will return on Saturday, March 17, when the second team comes down for their week ending on March 24.

There are a total of 33 members of Mount Juliet on this trip plus folks from Franklin, KY, and Hendersonville churches of Christ. We will be joined by members from GA, West Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, OK, MO and CT. We will also be joined by brothers and sisters from El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama to translate, teach and preach.

Our plans are to conduct a 2 week medical and evangelistic campaign, treating the local people physically and spiritually. This will be similar to previous campaigns, but entirely different. We will use our nursing staff to screen patients the first week and then the doctors and dentists come the second week to treat the patients who need their care.

Jack plans to update his blog at www.panamajack.org during the campaign as I do this one. However, I'll need to use his technology to do that so you might find it best to visit both sites for ino.

Considering that I haven't started packing yet, I had best end this and get busy. Please pray for our trip and the people of El Salvador.

Buddy
